Edgewater is a residential area located close to the Joondalup city centre and situated approximately 23 kilometres north of Perth's central business district. The area was first established in 1974, although apparently a small farm was located in the area in the early 1900s. The local postcode is 6027.

A quaint village shopping area is located off Edgewater Drive at the southern end of the community, containing a pharmacy, supermarket, news agency, hairdresser, local cafe, fish and chip shop, bottle shop, pizza shop, and a manicurist. Plus, a doctor's surgery and a veterinary service are located nearby. Several other small home businesses are operated throughout the suburb along with a primary school and a private senior high school.

One of the main features located adjacent to Edgewater is the magnificent Yellagonga Regional Park containing Lake Joondalup (the Glistening), along with the beautiful Picnic Cove, plus the proposed Quarry Park located not far away. The thoroughfares are lined with magnificent gardens displaying all manner of native and exotic flowering plants framing beautiful homes, with multiple small parks scattered throughout the community, plus the local council are apparently now proposing to plant street trees throughout much of the suburb.

It is a quiet, undulating hideaway with few through roads, and located close to Joondalup Drive, with the convenient Edgewater railway station located nearby, plus the area enjoys easy access to the Mitchel Freeway. The area almost has the atmosphere of a small country town, with several tree-lined streets and many open grassed areas and even a local cricket team that plays on the village green (Emerald Park) on lazy Sunday mornings.
